QoS of DSL2460T

I'm using this DSL2640T modem router. Currently i manage to find
out the function of QoS and i've asked helps from my friend who know about
it. My internet connection download is 1Mbps and upload is about 318kbps.

I use skype for video calling everyday to my wife who is in Canada now. But i
found that the video sometimes is very bad and having the choppy voice.

I had set the bandwidth to my port for 1024kbps while my other housemate port
is only 256kbps. I have to do so due to they massive downloads and not
cooperate with me.

I set the bandwidth via the port mapping qos page.

beside i also set something in Ip Qos page under classified by Application.

there are 4 option for me and below is my setting.

priority 1 40% weight voice

priority 2 40% weight video

priority 3 10% weight IGMP

priority 4 10% weight Data

it is more easier for me to send you my print screen for my QoS router page
so you may help or to guide me.

i've been leave so many message in so many other forums but there don't even
have any reply. I guess you're the only one who can help me now.so i can get
a smooth video call and good connection for surfing the net THANK YOU VERY
MUCH!!

your internet is only 1mb down and 256k up, same as mine, you need ALL your upload bandwidth to have any chance of smooth video and chat. And it still may not be enough. 512k up or more is needed. So if your sharing with someone even with QoS, your still going to have a bumpy video, but not as bad as trying to share a 256k up stream. 256l up is about 25kb/s.

Now on the IP QoS you need to put what ports for it to check.

How QoS works is this, you put what ports for what connections get the higher speed and that’s it. I noticed on it you have the ports set to 0 so it isn’t doing anything.

Understanding the basics QoS is key.

So when a connection is made and it is going through certain ports the router looks at the port numbers and where the connection is coming from, it checks the rules and then does what the rules say. In this case I would make everything 99% for yourself. Either that or bump off your roommate while your on chat lol.

With video it’s the upload speed that matters most since you are sending your chat and voice, same goes for your wifes end. I think skype can let you set lower quality setting which in turn require less bandwidth, you should tweak those as well.

So try this trick, under QoS choose application again, choose your computer and at the bottom you will see voice and data port ranges right now they say 0 to 0

Try setting them to 1-65535 lol or what every you like and use the bandwidth your self. Also when you make changes the router may need to be rest for them to take effect.

Does this help at all?

Hi Shane, As for the voice port, i just need to set it 1-65535? how about the video port? Besides, i don't know what port number i need to put in, it is I can put any number in as i like?

How about my Port Mapping QoS? either i can set for bandwidth or priority only.So which one should i set for it? And is that i have to do anything on the PVC? which currently is PVC0.

My connection speed is download 1463kbps while upload is only 150 kbps.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
