The rule of thumb I follow is the more cores the better. The more cores a CPU has ( I have a AMD quad core 2.5ghz per core) the more the system can do cpu heavy tasks at the same time (Which is a plus with any operating system.). Some programs can even take the multiple cores and use them all at once combining their speed. But for multitasking the more cores the better.
But for gaming we have a different issue. A lot of newer games are starting to support and use multiple cores. But all older games and some new ones don't, so you will be limited to the speed of just 1 core.
Your best bet is to try and find a multiple core CPU with as fast of speed you can, then you will have the best of both worlds.

Right, pure CPU speed is not
Right, pure CPU speed is not everything.
The Dual-Core E2140 is really rated at 3.2Ghz. So as you can see its not much slower in pure speed.
But it is way more powerful for most of today's needs, just as Shane has said.
So yes the Dual-Core E2140 is the better one to get in my point of view. In fact I will never buy anything less than a dual core processor ever again. Even if it is a full 1Ghz slower.
